WEALD (NORTH), a parish partly in the hundred of HARLOW, but chiefly in that of ONGAR, county of ESSEX, 3¼ miles (N E by E) from Epping, containing, with the hamlets of Hastingwood and Thornwood, 827 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Essex, and diocese of London, rated in the king’s books at £13 6 8, and in the patronage of the Bishop of London. The church is dedicated to St Andrew.

NORTH WEALD BASSETT, a parish in the hundred of Ongar, county Essex, 3 miles NE of Epping, its post town, and 8 NE of Waltham Abbey. The parish contains-the hamlets of Hastingwood and Thornwood. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester, value £353. The church, dedicated to St Andrew, stands about a mile from the village, and has been recently restored. The parochial charities produce about £23 per annum, of which £10 go to Burrell’s school.

The register book is very imperfect. The baptisms seem to have been regularly entered. But the burials are not so. There are no burials entered during the years 1657 and 1658 nor yet ann 1662-3-4-5 and 6 for the most part. No entry of marriages from after 1653 till the beginning of 1664. From that time they are registered to the end of 1681. From this time to Ann 1684 * with none and from the end of 1684 to Oct 1685 we find no entry of marriages but from that time they are regularly entered

This was generally an exceeding sickly yeare yet, blessed be God, the burials very few.
