
OAKLEY or OAKLEY MAGNA, a par. in the hund. of Hartismere, Suffolk, 3 miles NE of Eye, 2 SE of Scole, its post town, and 2½ NW of Diss railway station. The village, which is of small extent, is situated in a valley, and is wholly agricultural. It is bounded on the N by the river Waveney, which separates it it from the county of Norfolk. The living is a rectory annexed to that of Brome, in the diocese, of Norwich. The church, dedicated to St Nicholas, has a square tower and south porch. It is situated about a quarter of a mile from the village. The register dates from 1538. The charities produce about £22 per annum, realised from town lands, and which is expended on the church. Oakley House is the principal residence. Sir E C Kerrison, Bart, is lord of the manor and chief landowner.

Note that Johane Shawe widdowe late of this parishe deceased in hir life time did put into the hands of Edmunde Smithe of this parishe fortie shillings upon bonde to be and remayne for ever a towne stocke and he did pay unto for it three shillings a yeare for the use for it the whiche 3s she yearlye received and gave unto six of the porest people in the parishe soe longe as she lived. And furthermore willed and appointed that for the better continuance and performing of this hir charitable acte the sayde 40s shoulde yearely and everie yeare hereafter upon the five and twentie day of Marche be put forthe upon good bonde by the churche wardans for the time beyinge for the yearlie use of 3s a yeare the whyche 3s she woulde have to be bestowed upon six of the porest people in the parishe for the yime beyinge viz six pence a peece at the appointment and discession of the parson the church wardens for that time beynge.
