ROOTHING (MARGARET), a parish in the hundred of DUNMOW, county of ESSEX, 7¼ miles (NNE) from Chipping-Ongar, containing 209 inhabitants. The living is a rectory, in the archdeaconry of Middlesex, and diocese of London, rated in the king’s books at £10 12 6, and in the patronage of Mrs Harding. The church is dedicated to St Margaret.

MARGARET ROOTHING, a parish in the hundred of Dunmow, county Essex, 7 miles NE of Chipping-Ongar, its post town. The parish, which is of small extent, is wholly agricultural. The village is situated on elevated ground. The greater part of the land is arable. Marks, now a hamlet of this parish, was once an independent chapelry belonging to Stondon Massey. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester, value £223. The church, dedicated to St Margaret, has a Norman porch at the western side, and a turret containing one bell. The register dates from 1538. The charities consist of a small school endowment, and the annual sum of £11 0s, distributed to the poor in bread.
